High quality scissors from Ernest Wright

Ernest Wright is a traditional scissors manufacturer from Sheffield, England. The company was founded in 1902 by Ernest Wright Sr., the son of a local scissors maker. Ernest Wright is committed to producing scissors of the highest quality. With attention to detail, unique tools of the highest quality are created. The scissors are manufactured in a small workshop on Broad Lane in Sheffield.

From blank to blade: The beginning of scissors production

After the blanks are forged from steel, a machine grinds off the first top layer. Further refinements are then made by hand to form the initial sharp cutting edge. The blade handle is ground with a belt sander to smooth the insides and give them a shine. This process ensures that each pair of scissors is of the highest quality and will enrich you for a lifetime.

Hardening and polishing: the final processing of the scissors

The scissors are hardened through salt or vacuum hardening, ensuring their long-lasting sharpness. The hardened blades are deburred and smoothed in a rotating drum with ceramic pebbles and polishing paste, then precisely assembled, with a perfect curve hammered onto each blade. The finished scissors are then polished to a high shine. After a successful quality inspection, the name Ernest Wright is engraved on the scissors.

Wright family business: A succession of generations

The Wright family had been involved in the manufacturing and tempering of scissors since the 19th century. Walter Wright, a well-known "Little Master" of Sheffield, specialized in finishing scissor blades and was known as the "Master Scissor Setter." Since Walter Wright entered the scissors industry, several generations followed him. His son Ernest founded the company in 1902. During the first five decades of the 20th century, the company grew steadily and relocated to Talbot Street.

From rise to crisis and the revival of a tradition

The long-established Ernest Wright company flourished and grew into a major supplier of scissors and tools both at home and abroad. By 1977, the company employed over eighty people and exported to 45 countries. Due to globalization, by the 1990s there were only two scissor manufacturers left in Sheffield, and both were a mere shadow of their former selves. In 1988, Ernest Wright and Son Ltd. went into administration but was rescued by a distant relative. Philip Wright took over the business again in 2000 and led it into the new millennium.
