Tool blacksmith Mirko Günther: Hand-forged axes and hatchets

With embers and hammer: Traditional blacksmithing by Mirko Günther

Mirko Günther is one of the last blacksmiths in Germany who still masters the ancient craft of free-form forging. In his axe forge in Pleißa, Saxony, he creates hand-forged axes and hatchets using centuries-old techniques. Using traditional tools and machinery from the last century, Mirko painstakingly crafts his pieces by hand – each piece is unique. The blacksmith attaches great importance to ensuring that his axes and hatchets are not pressed into a mold, but are forged entirely by hand, which gives them a unique quality and durability.

Free-form forging: handcrafted like 100 years ago

Free-form forging is an art mastered by only a few toolsmiths in Germany. Mirko Günther is one of them. Instead of simply pressing the metal into a mold, he processes it with up to 400 blows using an air hammer – with extreme precision. This technique not only creates the axes' characteristic appearance but also guarantees exceptional strength. Each hand-forged axe is created with painstaking craftsmanship and the utmost concentration.
