The tailor's scissors for the highest demands

Like all Ernest Wright scissors, the 8.25" Dressmaker's Shears are crafted from two solid steel bars. Using the traditional high-temperature forging process, each bar is formed into a blank before the assembly experts begin their work. The template for the 8.25" is an old, rediscovered, and revitalized Sheffield pattern. It guarantees the highest precision and durability for every tailoring task.

The Dressmaker shears are delivered in a high-quality gift box.

Made in Sheffield

Ernest Wright – handmade scissors from England

The term "Made in Sheffield" represents the city's long tradition and heritage in the steel and manufacturing industries. Ernest Wright adheres to traditional manufacturing methods, despite the general decline of handmade scissors craftsmanship in the United Kingdom. The company's craftsmen are known as "putters" or "master-putter-togetherers."

Product highlights

DRESSMAKER von Ernest Wright

Why are some scissors bent at the sides?

Some scissors, such as the Dressmaker, have shanks that extend upwards and away from the blades. This is a great advantage for tailors who often have to make long cuts in fabric while working on a tabletop. With a straight shank, the lower shank would catch on the edge of the table, making it much more difficult to work with the scissors with precision.

Durable carbon steel blade

The Ernest Wright Dressmaker scissors are made from carbon steel, a widely used type of steel that consists of iron and carbon. As the carbon content increases, the tensile strength and hardness of steel increases, while the ductility decreases. This combination of properties makes high-carbon steels ideal for applications that require high resistance to plastic deformation.

What should be considered when caring for the Dressmaker scissors

After use, the Dressmaker scissors should be wiped with a dry cloth. When not in use, the scissors should be stored in a dry place. A drop of household or machine oil can be applied to the screw area at regular intervals. The screw should not be adjusted for safety reasons.

What must a good pair of tailor’s scissors be able to do?

A pair of cutting scissors must have a sharp and, above all, long blade. The handles should be designed so that they can be used for longer periods without getting tired. A pair of tailor's scissors should also have a balanced weight - not too light so that you can remain stable while working, but also not too heavy so that you don't have to use too much strength.

Our visit to Ernest Wright

In September 2024, the Iconic Tools team visited the factory in Sheffield. Upon entering the small workshop on Broad Lane, you can sense that history comes alive here: Old machines, some of which are over a hundred years old, still run like new. We had the unique opportunity to watch how simple blanks are transformed into unique, high-quality scissors through precise handcrafting. Every movement is perfect, every detail counts.

The manufacturing process of the scissors

Scissors like the DRESSMAKER undergo a careful manufacturing process that ensures the highest quality in several steps to provide you with a product that will delight you for a lifetime.

Forging & Forming

The blank—the rough basic shape of the scissors—is created from glowing steel. The final polishing is then done by hand.

Grinding and hardening

The inside of the handle (arm) is smoothed with a belt sander. Depending on the model, the scissors are then hardened in a salt bath or under vacuum.

Rumbling

The scissor halves are treated overnight in a drum with ceramic stones, which is called a rumpler.
This removes fine sanding marks and makes the surface silky smooth.

composition

The "Putter-Togetherer" carefully joins the two halves of the scissors, ensuring a precise fit to ensure the characteristic smoothness.

Sharpening & polishing

The blades are sharpened on a traditional whetstone. Each pair of scissors is then polished to a high shine.

Quality control & engraving

The scissors are checked for quality. Only at the end, when everything is perfect, is the name "Ernest Wright" engraved into the scissors.
